The
theatreBuilt in 1851-1852 by the
architect Gabriel Davioud, thanks to a public subscription. The theatre which can be
seen today is not completely the one built by Gabriel Davioud. The frontage was restored
in 1928, according to Boileau plans (architect of the Good market).
Orriginally, neo-classic difference, this one did not include
a pediment, only one cornice, and it was decorated with two medallions. The bays in
semicircular arch were decorated of three openwork balconies. The initial relief was thus
gummed. On the other hand, the show room did not undergo modifications. It's an
Italian theatre style. The decoration of the ceiling is allotted to Leon Gerosme. It is a
didactic decoration: the medallions of the voussoirs representing Shakespeare, Molière, Corneille
and Mozart are supported by allegorical figures. Elias Robert carried out the bodies
carved of the room and the hearth. The caryatids and the children of the stage boxes can
be particularly noticed. On the place, stands the statue of the scientist naturalist
Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire , made by the sculptor Elias Robert. As the theatre, this
statue was erected thanks to a public subscription. |
